This heartfelt debut from Christa Carter takes us through an individual's exploration of love through self-discovery, heartbreak and healing. Throughout the collection we see the speaker reflect fondly on relationships—"we were making music long before we knew / the lyrics." At other times we sense a deep fear of being hurt—"it scares me / losing myself to be loved by you." Ultimately, Carter uses relationship to show how dependency can lead to dangerous places—"But we remind each other of just how fragile / we are, how brokenness really works. . ." These heartfelt and emotional reflections drive us through a roller coaster of experiences that eventually lead the speaker to a place of freedom. This is beautiful work. ~ Angelo Geter, Poet Laureate of Rock Hill, SC
